Nollywood actress, Nora Nkiruka Ugo has been reported dead. The actress died over the weekend in Lagos after batling a yet to be disclosed ailment. Her death was disclosed by a colleague, Actress Ruth Kadiri on her Instagram page. Ruth Kadiri wrote: “I’m so scared of putting this picture up, not sure if it’s the right thing to do. The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday adjourned until February 6, hearing in a suit filed before it by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking to remove Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Bagudu. The trial Judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned the matter after listening to the submission of Mr. Bagudu’s counsel, Yakubu Maikyau, (SAN). Suspended DG of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), SEC DG Mr Mounir Gwarzo Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, on Tuesday insisted that suspension of Mr Munir Gwarzo, Director-General of Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), was valid. At an investigative hearing organised by House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market and Institutions on the issue, the minister said that the suspension was in line with public service rules. She said that the action became necessary in order to sustain the confidence of investors and safeguard the integrity of the Nigerian capital market. The minister alleged that Gwarzo was a director in a private company while in office as the DG of the commision, thereby violating public service rules. “Mr Munir was suspended in accordance with the Public Service Rules (PSRs) 03405 and 03406,” she said. INEC seeks NCC's help to electronically transmit, collate results The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought the help of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to electronically transmit and collate results during the 2019 general elections. The Chairman of the electoral commission, Mahmood Yakubu, said this during a visit to the NCC on Tuesday as the general election draws near. The INEC delegation was received by the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Umar Dambatta, and other management staff of the organisation. The commission chairman said INEC was committed to deepening the deployment of technology in elections, adding that this is the reason there is need to discuss with telecommunications operators in Nigeria so that election results can be electronically collated and transmitted. INEC said it also wants NCC to help in voter education and publicity towards 2019 by sending bulk SMS on imperative of peaceful elections, collection of permanent voters

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere has reacted to a statement by the Governor of Kaduna State that there are no alternatives to President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigerians look forward to the 2019 presidential election. A 27-year-old Nigerian man, Fred Amaechi, suspected of being a member of Boko Haram, has been arrested in Germany. He was detained on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 in Bavaria and a day later a judge issued an arrest warrant and ordered that he be remanded in custody, the chief federal prosecutor said in a statement, Reuters  reports. “He is strongly suspected of being a member of the foreign terrorist organisation, Boko Haram,” the statement said. It said Amaechi Fred O. was believed to have joined Boko Haram in 2013 and had admitted to actively taking part in four attacks against Nigerian civilians during his one-year membership of the group. He is accused of killing several people during two attacks on schools and one attack on a village and taking part in another attack on a village, during which members of Boko Haram took girls as hostages and burned down a church. Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, at the weekend hosted the ex-Speakers Forum meeting in his house in Abuja. Amaechi, was former chairman of the forum, while Governor Samuel Lalong of Plateau State is the current Chairman. The meeting had in attendance over 80 members and may not be unconnected to the 2019 election. The forum, however, explained that though it remained non-partisan and non-political, it served as a pressure group to the leaders. The forum’s Secretary, Hon. Stanley Ohajuru, said the highlight of the meeting was the vote of confidence passed by all former speakers on the present leadership of Lalong. “The meeting is not geared towards 2019. This is a very formidable body and anybody who is aspiring for any position in Nigeria who deems it fit to consult with the forum is free to so do, irrespective of your political party; it does not really matter.
